I went to the G.I. department and had a consultation with Dr. Wolfson, which was wonderful. He was thorough, informative, and helpful.. I was scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy with Dr. Eluri. She was attentive informative. She told me exactly what to expect before the procedure and the anesthesiologist was great. I liked him because he had a sense of humor and all I remember them saying is Donna we need you to turn on your left side.. I was on my way home half an hour after I woke up and had no side effects whatsoever from the procedure of the anesthesiologist so while I’m reading all these negative reviews for myself, it was a wonderful experience and I thank everyone in the department.

I was a patient with Mayo Clinic GI for several years, and during that time my health declined dramatically. I was under the care of Dr. Devault, whose approach to my case was dismissive and, ultimately, harmful. At the time, I was experiencing extreme weight loss, severe nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting 8–20 times per day (including water), chronic reflux, and constipation so severe that I could go weeks to months without a bowel movement. Despite these alarming and debilitating symptoms, my concerns were routinely dismissed. Dr. Devault even suggested “rumination syndrome,” implying that my condition was rooted in overthinking my health, rather than investigating the clear and severe physical issues at play. Multiple procedures were ordered—including an anorectal manometry, 24-hour impedance study, colonoscopy, and endoscopy—all of which showed concerning abnormalities. Yet many of these results were never communicated to me. I only discovered them after printing out my own medical records. For example: • A hiatal hernia was identified but never mentioned in my visits. • My 24-hour impedance study showed 90% ineffective swallows (meaning only 10% of my swallows were functioning), a profoundly abnormal finding that was ignored until I personally raised it. In addition to ignoring key diagnostic findings, I was prescribed high-dose medications without proper explanation of their risks. For instance, I was kept on a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for months, despite the well-known guideline that PPIs are generally intended for short-term use (4–8 weeks) due to long-term risks to the stomach, kidneys, and other organs. No warnings were given about these potential side effects. The dismissive care I received under Dr. Devault and Mayo Clinic resulted in years of untreated disease and unnecessary suffering. Ultimately, after leaving Mayo Clinic and seeking care elsewhere, multiple severe abnormality’s were found throughout my GI system. These include chronic conditions that went undiagnosed and unmanaged the entire time I was under Mayo’s care. Mayo Clinic markets itself as a world leader in gastrointestinal care, but my experience was the opposite: critical test results ignored, diagnoses missed, dangerous prescriptions mismanaged, and symptoms minimized as “anxiety.” This is not the standard of care one expects—or deserves—from any physician, let alone a hospital of Mayo’s reputation. I have attached some photos below of the state I was in with my care during Mayo Clinic GI, under Dr. Devault. Severely thin, malnourished, and basically bones. With no hope because I was dismissed time and time again by him.

Saw Dr. Lacey. He said I did not have a certain condition, diagnosed by another doctor elsewhere, because I didn't have "the cause" of this condition. I decided to continue treatment of this condition with my original doctor since it was working. Turns out, "the cause" of this condition is not known according to Mayo's own website, though you are more likely to have it if you have certain other conditions. He just completely wrote me off and wouldn't listen to me once I said I had been diagnosed with this condition. Saying that to have this condition, I had to have "the cause", which other doctors from other institutions say that sometimes the cause is unknown. I had to go off one of my medications to do a procedure he reluctantly did but I was barely off it for 24 hours. I can't say much on the other doctors but do not see him. (The cause here in quotations is for my privacy of my medical history)

Dr. Travers was kind, he was a good listener but second doctor Dr. Cangemi had not even looked at his chart. He gave us less than 15 minutes. It took months and months to get in and we traveled from Tampa to get there and he had not even reviewed his background. They did not have nutritional appt set up and nothing available for CBT for six months too!

Made one diagnosis without proper diagnostic studies, just assumed. Then cited insurance coverage for reason not to switch treatment when I couldn’t tolerate one treatment without even giving me the option to self pay for a verified diagnosis. Ended up with complications and worsening of both the diagnosed and missed diagnosed diseases. Didn’t want to leave since I get all my care here but was left with no other choice. Got an appointment with Borland and Groover in 2 days.
